Pig Destroyer unveil long lost track & collection album reissue

Pig Destroyer - CBGBs

We are stoked to announce announce the deluxe reissue of Virginia grind outfit Pig Destroyer‘s “Painter of Dead Girls” collection album, fully remastered and expanded with additional audio, additional artwork, archival photos and long-lost lyrics. Showcasing the band at their most primal (as a then-bassless power trio) these recordings capture the varied sounds of an envelope-pushing, borderline feral outfit.

In the leadup to this deluxe reissue, a largely unheard yet definitive version of their late-90s demo-era track ‘Delusional Supremacy’ is now streaming via Noisey:

http://noisey.vice.com/blog/pig-destroyer-painter-of-dead-girls

With a sonically massive rendering, ‘Delusional Supremacy 2K’ was previously found only on an obscure early-00’s sampler, unavailable widespread until now. This blistering PxDx deep cut is finally given proper attention, and is unlocked within the “Painter of Dead Girls (Deluxe Edition)” digital pre-orders, as well as streaming as a standalone single via Spotify:

iTuneshttps://itunes.apple.com/us/album/painter-dead-girls-deluxe/id1096417551

Bandcamphttps://roboticempire.bandcamp.com/album/pig-destroyer-painter-of-dead-girls-deluxe-edition

Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/album/4FFGrI53uwu6cf74HI2T4x

The vinyl version of “Painter of Dead Girls (Deluxe Edition)” is also available now for pre-order in the Robotic Empire – Online Store, including a limited color vinyl option.

Finally available again on vinyl after over a decade of unavailability, the first half of this collection was initially tracked as an equipment burn-in test during the millineal year leading up to Pig Destroyer self-recording their seminal “Prowler In The Yard” full-length. The secondary bulk of the material initially yielded their most sonically powerful recordings at the time, put to tape in the late 1990’s at Oblivion Studios (pg.99, Enemy Soil, etc).

Rounding out this expanded edition of “Painter of Dead Girls” is a raw mosh basement live recording of ‘Rejection Fetish’, along with a truly bludgeoning cover of Helmet‘s ‘In The Meantime’ complimenting the existing Dwarves and Stooges covers. With 19 blistering tracks in total all meticulously remastered by James Plotkin, this key piece of the Pig Destroyer catalog looks and sounds better than ever.

The original album artwork by Chris Taylor has been extended into a beautiful gatefold jacket with added metallic silver highlights. Newly created extra artwork adornes the interior, along with recently unearthed lyrics to all the PxDx songs found on “Painter of Dead Girls”, printed in full for the first time ever. A double-sided photo collage innersleeve houses the vinyl, containing classic photos from the era surrounding these recordings. The digital download versions includes a PDF booklet of these elements.

The vinyl version includes a full digital download of the album, and Pig Destroyer‘s classic “Painter of Dead Girls” collection is finally done justice on this deluxe edition release.

In a feature last year, Vice called Pig Destroyer “one of the most influential American grindcore bands” and frontman J.R. Hayes a “lyrical genius”. Commenting on the new reissue, Hayes states:

“Painter of Dead Girls is a record that really benefits from being on vinyl and the crushing new mastering job by James Plotkin makes it sound better than ever. This record combines the two EPs (split with Benumb and split with Gnob) that we released right before Prowler in the Yard. The material for the Benumb split was written in a couple days and recorded in one quick session the weekend before we recorded Prowler, and once we did that album, we kind of forgot about these two EPs, which is a shame, ’cause I think this might be some of our most vicious stuff. Fast-forward a couple months and somebody smashes my car window and steals my backpack, which contains a bunch of my notebooks. Talk about depressing. I thought the lyrics for the Benumb split were gone, and I never bothered to sit down and try to figure them out again.

Fast-forward a few years and Robotic Empire is compiling Painter of Dead Girls for its original CD release. Andy asks for the lyrics and I’m like [tugging at shirt collar] ‘Uh… about that…’ I mean, it’s one thing to not print the lyrics on purpose, but who doesn’t even know their own lyrics? It was kind of embarrassing. Fast-forward to a couple years ago, and I discover a stash of forgotten notebooks while I’m moving. Pinned inside one, I find a crumpled sheet that has most of the lyrics for the Benumb split, and this inspires me to actually sit down and figure the rest of them out. Fast-forward to now, and here they are, in print for the first time ever, along with some brand-new artwork from my favorite artist Chris “Crude” Taylor and first-class packaging courtesy of renowned music pimp Andy Low and the Robotic Empire. I can’t wait to hold one of these babies in my grubby hands.

Long live Grind. And Virginia.”

Robotic Empire Launches 3rd Nirvana Tribute Album!

On this lovely day in April we are extremely pleased to announce the release of our third Nirvana Tribute album titled “Doused In Mud, Soaked In Bleach”. This newest LP completes a trifecta of homages to the legendary grunge band’s official studio albums with “Whatever Nevermind” in 2015 and “In Utero, In Tribute” having been released in 2014.

The classic debut album “Bleach” is covered in full by 13 diverse artists including Basement, Beach Slang, Big Hush, Circa Survive, Daughters, Defeater, The Fall Of Troy, Mean Jeans, Rob Crow’s Gloomy Place, The Saddest Landscape, This Will Destroy You, Thou, and Young Widows.

Appropriately reflecting Nirvana’s rawest studio album alongside a full-circle nod to our root genres, this is arguably the darkest, heaviest release in the tribute series. A tasteful re-envision of these classic songs sees all 13 “Bleach” tracks run through the bands’ creative engines, putting an intense new perspective on these 25+ year old songs.

On our update today we are offering a limited number of Record Store Day versions of the “Doused In Mud, Soaked In Bleach” tribute. This version comes on metallic silver colored vinyl and includes a bonus over sized poster. The standard versions of the release come on white colored vinyl and clear colored vinyl, minus the poster and all copies include a download code. Available now in the Robotic Empire Online Store, head on over and pick out the copy (or copies!) you’d like to purchase.

In case you missed it, back in March we had a killer distro update, bringing in many new titles and lots of crucial restocks. We’re re-listing those products below for you to browse through in hopes you may find something you’d like to add to that shopping cart! Also released in March was the Deluxe Cassette Release for California band Hollow Sunshine. This set includes a cloth patch and enamel pin showcasing the artwork of guitarist Reuben Sawyer. Don’t miss out, this is a one time pressing!

Big Hush premiere their cover of Nirvana’s ‘Sifting’ via NPR Music + STORE LIST

Big-Hush-by-Travis-Bozeman600px

Washington, DC quartet Big Hush premiere today their cover of Nirvana‘s 1988 classic, ‘Sifting’, via NPR Music:

http://www.npr.org/sections/allsongs/2016/04/14/473967006/big-hush-turns-nirvanas-sifting-into-a-droney-dream

Comprised of Emma Baker, Owen Wuerker, Genevieve Ludwig and Chris Taylor, Big Hush trade in their usual blissed-out shoegaze fuzz for a slightly more subtle approach to the sludgey classic. Bassist Chris Taylor (also a member of Pygmy Lush) elaborates:

“I wrote the skeleton on each of pygmylush’s [Nirvana cover] songs and this big hush song, brought them in and let the ensemble of both bands color it how they saw fit. I always approach Nirvana covers as a re-write, I’m not that talented as a player so I always try to dumb them down a bit so I can play and sing them at the same time, what happens after that is a by product of the amazingly talented musicians I keep company with.

Every member of big hush is a songbird, they can all sing incredibly well, and immediately have a catalog of harmonies to choose from, Genevieve and Emma make the scale and dynamic grand, Owen can play literally every instrument very well, and in fact he rewrote the basic riff I gave him to give it texture, on this recording he plays every instrument, organ, acoustic, bass, shaker, tambourine, and we recorded this version in one day.

Sifting was an interesting song to approach this way, it’s basically a kinda metal Melvins kinda thing, so we pretty much followed the structure and not the notes, and just tried to make it dreamy.”

The resulting cover mirrors a recent Washington Post live review of Big Hush, describing the band as such:

“Big Hush’s principal affinities with dream-pop [are] the blurry quality of its vocals and the way its steel-wool guitars scrubbed the other elements… While Big Hush is still defining its style, it’s already moved beyond predictable genre tags.”

Completing a trifecta of tributes to Nirvana‘s studio albums by Robotic Empire, on this third full-LP homage, “Doused in Mud, Soaked in Bleach”, Big Hush‘s cover joins a diverse array of others from the likes of Basement, Beach Slang, Circa Survive, Daughters, Defeater, The Fall of Troy, Mean Jeans, Rob Crow’s Gloomy Place, The Saddest Landscape, This Will Destroy You, Thou and Young Widows.

“Doused in Mud, Soaked in Bleach” is available on vinyl and digitally this Saturday, April 16th. The vinyl is arriving now at stores for Record Store Day, and the digital release is also available for pre-order with tracks by Big Hush, Basement, Circa Survive and This Will Destroy You unlocked within for immediate download:

This Will Destroy You stream cover of Nirvana’s “Paper Cuts” via Pitchfork

TWDY---500px

Texas post-rock band This Will Destroy You premiere their cover of Nirvana’s “Paper Cuts” today via Pitchfork:

http://pitchfork.com/news/64621-this-will-destroy-you-cover-nirvanas-paper-cuts-listen/

The quartet, comprised of Jeremy Galindo, Chris King, Donovan Jones and Alex Bhore, enlisted the additional vocal talents of Kate Fisher and Lily Taylor to create a haunting, expanded rendition of the “Bleach”-era classic.

On their approach to reenvisioning the song, TWDY comments,

“The framework for “Paper Cuts” was a welcomed challenge to work on as the track is already doomy and repetive. Going slow and low seemed to be the way to put our own stamp on the cover while maintaining the rawness and intensity of the original.”

The cover is part of Robotic Empire’s third Nirvana tribute LP, completing a trifecta of homages to the legendary grunge band’s studio albums. “Doused in Mud, Soaked in Bleach” is being released in conjunction with Record Store Day, akin to predecessors “Whatever Nevermind” (2015) and “In Utero: In Tribute” (2014).

“Doused in Mud, Soaked in Bleach” will be available on both vinyl and digitally come Saturday, April 16th. The physical release is en route to stores for Record Store Day, and the digital release is available for pre-order now:

Robotic Empire Mega Rad Distro Update and Nirvana Tribute song premiers!

Just before we close out the month of March, we’re squeezing this kickass distro update in for you! There’s so many goodies it’ll be hard not to talk about each and every one of them but here goes…

First up we’ll mention 2 side businesses run by label manager Lindsay that I’m sure a lot of you guys have noticed flyers and stickers for in your orders. Wortcunner Records was started in 2015 so that the amazing ambient albums by Brooklyn band 1 Mile North, could be released on vinyl for the very first time. We’ve got both those 180 gram colored vinyl records in the shop now so give a listen and pick up those deluxe offerings. Zeep Piercing Aftercare is yet another side project and since we know some of you folks have piercings and gauged ears, well these balms might be just the thing you need to enhance your piercing experience and they are great on tattoos too. All hand harvested ingredients and on horseback to boot!

Alright, after that shameless self promotion the Chelsea Wolfe catalog we carry has increased immensely. Love, love, love us some Chelsea Wolfe so we’re stoked to have these available for you to purchase if you don’t own them already. The new Body 2×12″ arrived yesterday and we’ve got copies on pink colored vinyl. Picked up some great vinyl from Willowtip Records out in Pennsylvania, one of which is the CrowpathRed on Chrome which comes on heavy 200 gram vinyl! Some out of the ordinary items for us to carry would be the Makaya McCraven album that just recently came out on International Anthem. Gorgeous packaging and some highly enjoyable jazzy tunes. Please give the bandcamp sound samples a listen. Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings is a personal favorite over here so we’re starting off with the Dap-Dippin album and hope to pick up a few more albums in April. This woman has got some voice on her! If you enjoy The Alabama Shakes, give Sharon Jones a try. Many other goodies in that New Items list but we’ll let you discover them yourselves in the Robotic Empire Online Store

The restock list is quite beefy itself with highlights being a heck of a lot of Deathwish Records restocks, Old Man Gloom and Wrekmeister Harmonies. Forcefield Records sent us more Windhand and Yajuta and that pricey (but well worth it) Year Of No Light import is back again. Glance through these lists below and we hope you find something interesting to put on the turntable.

Thanks again for all the Hollow Sunshine cassette orders, those should all be arriving to everyone by now and we know you’ll enjoy that one. There’s an alternate color version of the patch that was included in that tape set, it’s on tan cloth and sold separate in case folks are interested in dressing up a jacket or a bag for this spring/summer etc. We just placed that up for sale on the Robotic Empire Online Store so head over and give it a look.

In Record Store Day news, we’ve got some great premieres going on for the upcoming, third! Nirvana tribute LP, “Doused In Mud, Soaked In Bleach”. English rock band Basement unveil their tribute to Nirvana‘s “Bleach”-era classic, ‘School’ via The AV Club:

AV Club’s Basement Premiere

Then we’ve got Circa Survive premiering their cover of ‘Love Buzz’, originally written/performed by Shocking Blue but made infamous by Nirvana. Alternative Press is streaming the song now along with a brief Q&A with the band:

Alternative Press Streams Love Buzz

Digital pre-orders are up now and aside from Google Play, all the pre-orders below include an immediate download of the Circa Survive and Basement tracks:

BASEMENT unveil their tribute to NIRVANA’s “School”

English rock band Basement unveil their tribute to Nirvana‘s “Bleach”-era classic, ‘School’ via The AV Club:

http://www.avclub.com/article/basement-goes-back-school-nirvana-tribute-compilat-234431

Utilizing their renown sound of heavy yet melodic hardcore/alternative rock, Basement opts for a somewhat traditional rendition of the frustrated anthem. On their approach to the song, vocalist Andrew Fisher elaborates:

“We picked ‘School’ because it’s really heavy and so simple but so good. It has two parts the whole way through. Just goes to show how dynamics can make a song interesting. Whenever we play it I wish we wrote it because it’s that good.

We flirted with the idea of trying to make it ‘our own’ and change it, but because the song is so simple everything we came up with sounded forced and wrong. Instead we thought we’d try our best to do the song justice and so recorded it live and tried to keep it as true to the original as possible. I think it came out pretty cool”

The track is found on Robotic Empire’s third tribute to Nirvana‘s legendary studio albums. “Doused in Mud, Soaked in Bleach” completes a trifecta, with the classic debut album “Bleach” covered in full by 13 diverse artists (including Basement, Beach Slang, Big Hush, Circa Survive, Daughters, Defeater, The Fall of Troy, Mean Jeans, Rob Crow’s Gloomy Place, The Saddest Landscape, This Will Destroy You, Thou and Young Widows) and set for release on Saturday, April 16th (Record Store Day) on both vinyl, and digitally.

Digital pre-orders of the album are up now, with “School” available immediately:

Robotic Empire completes Nirvana tribute trifecta with “Doused In Mud, Soaked In Bleach”

Doused-In-Mud-400web

We are extremely stoked to announce our third Nirvana tribute LP, “Doused In Mud, Soaked In Bleach”, completing a trifecta of homages to the legendary band’s official studio albums.

The Hall of Famer’s debut LP “Bleach” is covered in full, start to finish, by a diverse range of independent/alternative artists including Basement, Beach Slang, Big Hush, Circa Survive, Daughters, Defeater, The Fall of Troy, Mean Jeans, Rob Crow’s Gloomy Place, The Saddest Landscape, This Will Destroy You, Thou and Young Widows.

Appropriately reflecting Nirvana‘s rawest studio album alongside a full-circle nod to our root genres, this is arguably the darkest, heaviest release in the tribute series. A tasteful re-envision of these classic songs sees all 13 “Bleach” tracks run through the bands’ creative engines, putting an intense new perspective on these 25+ year old songs.

Today, Circa Survive premiers their cover of ‘Love Buzz’, originally written/performed by Shocking Blue but made infamous by Nirvana. Alternative Press is streaming the song now along with a brief Q&A with the band:

On their method of covering a cover, Brendan Ekstrom from Circa Survive says:

“It’s hard to explain but in my mind ‘Love Buzz’ is a Nirvana song. It’s one of the first songs that I obsessed over when I was 14 years old and was learning to play guitar. At the time, I thought Nirvana wrote it. It just fit so well with the rest of the record…. I didn’t need to listen to the originals when the band who was making me believe in music had their own amazing version for me to listen to.”

Circa Survive is one of three reoccurring bands who’ve contributed to all of the Nirvana tribute LPs Robotic Empire’s issued, including 2015’s “Whatever Nevermind” and 2014’s “In Utero: In Tribute”. Like both previous tributes, the vinyl edition of “Doused In Mud, Soaked In Bleach” is being released in conjunction with Record Store Day, occurring on Saturday, April 16th this year.

The Record Store Day edition exclusive metallic-silver vinyl color and includes a bonus oversized poster, with standard editions (sans poster) to follow RSD via our Online Store. All copies include a high-quality digital download of the full release.

The album will also be released digitally across all major platforms on Saturday, April 16th, with iTunes and Bandcamp pre-orders live now, including an immediate download of the Circa Survive cover for pre-orderers:

Robotic Empire March New Releases! Hollow Sunshine & Creation Is Crucifixion

We’ve got two new releases for you guys this lovely March 11th and first off is the 4 song EP from California duo Hollow Sunshine. Presented as a deluxe cassette release that includes a 5×5 cloth patch and a black and white enamel pin, showcasing Reuben Sawyer’s artwork on both. Clear cassettes with printed J-cards. Limited to 100 copies.

Versatile visual artist (of key work for Destruction Unit, Chelsea Wolfe + Deafheaven) and multi-instrumentalist Reuben Sawyer along with vocalist Morgan Enos follow two well received LPs and a slew of EPs with further- reaching explorations of Hollow Sunshine’s drone/darkwave/pop amalgam. “Burning” is the new EP from the increasingly prolific California duo, and while the previous Hollow Sunshine work explored the landscapes of 1990s atmospheric pop and sludge, “Burning” pushes deeper into both the past and the future. The four new songs feel ancient and coated in precious metals, as Sawyer and Enos tap into the muses of Florian Fricke, Alice Coltrane and Bill Fay to form their most mature and realized release yet. Fans of contemporary, heavy/pop-influenced outfits Jesu and Hum will also rejoice in the beautiful contrast of Sawyer’s downtuned guitar mass with Enos’ subdued, haunting vocal melodies as the duo deftly wade through songs of helplessness, departure and relief.

Next up is the Creation Is Crucifixion 2×12″ that we took pre-orders for last month. These are in house and have been shipping out to all those folks who placed their early orders. The release date is officially today!

Pittsburgh tech-metal hactivists Creation is Crucifixion emulate Lazarus with a double-LP collecting their last recordings along with an impressive live set. Longrunning metal/hardcore website Lambgoat is now streaming the full Antenna Builder + Rerecorded Splits / Live In Geneva album!

Lambgoat Stream

The long-rumored Antenna Builder track, the ‘final’ recording by Creation is Crucifixion’s last active lineup is a 9-minute opus that brilliantly merges CIC’s heavy technical metal along with the noise passages the band became renown for. As one of the highest-fidelity recordings from the band’s extensive output, the lineup’s similarly oppressive Rerecorded Splits material fleshes out the first 12″ in the gatefold double-LP package

Accompanying the studio-recordings 12″ is a live LP from a classic CIC’s set from on their last European tour, captured live in Geneva during May of the millennial year. These 15+ year recordings showcase tracks from across the band’s catalog of material, with a higher clarity than some of their raw studio recordings.

Separately mastered by James Plotkin for both vinyl and digital formats, the Antenna Builder + Rerecorded Splits / Live In Geneva 2xLP comes housed in a stark black and white gatefold jacket with gold ink overlaid. A digital download of the full release is included.

Following a reunited appearance at 2015’s King pf the Monsters Festival, CIC guitarist Adam MacGregor said the following regarding the band’s future:

“It’s now a radically different world than when Creation is Crucifixion launched in 1997, and individually we’re much different people than we were during the band’s run. But one thing hasn’t changed, and that’s our love of writing and playing music that challenges both ourselves and the listener. The new material we are working on aims to do both. With members divided geographically by wide swaths now, we’ve been exploring some different approaches to composition, and rethinking what a “band” really can be. Whatever we come up with, the goal is to respect our past work without simply rehashing it. And if it meets that double bottom line, then we’ll be excited to share. Expect at least one live appearance in 2016 (TBA) in support of “Antenna Builder” and possibly more to come.”

If you’ve not picked up a vinyl copy yet head on over to the Robotic Empire Online Store and take your pick of Black or Gold vinyl.
