City of Caterpillar announces reunion shows

coc-live-fil-mako-1

Over a dozen years after disbanding, the long defunct City of Caterpillar announce a string of reunion shows for early 2017.

The quartet initially formed in Richmond, Virginia in 2000, carving out a handful of demos and EPs before releasing their sole, self-titled album in 2002. Renown for an innovative combination of punk rock, emotional hardcore and dramatic instrumental crescendos, City of Caterpillar disbanded in late 2003 but went on to endure a postmortem legacy shared by few of their peers.

Posthumously, Pitchfork referred to them as a band “who successfully blended abstract-rock with hardcore immediacy” while All Music elaborated “The band’s moody, sometimes spastic, sometimes brooding breed of dark rock is both well-written and timeless — spacy expressionism and straight-to-the-heart honesty. Albums of this breed only come along a few times in a genre.

In 2015, renewed interest in the band grew with digital reissues of their LP and Demo + Live Recording collection, followed by a 2016 vinyl reissue of the landmark self-tited LP.

Vice’s music outlet Noisey recently revisited the group in a lengthy retrospective feature, saying that City of Caterpillarencompassed an era” and “strangled…stretched, and mutated screamo until it reflected both the shattering chaos and the eerie quietude of its time“.

Performing for the first time in 13 years with their classic lineup of Brandon Evans (guitar/vocals), Kevin Longendyke (bass/vocals), Jeff Kane (guitar) and Ryan Parrish (drums), City of Caterpillar have scheduled four East Coast shows with a slew of longtime friends’ bands supporting:

Friday, January 13th 2017 – Richmond, VA @ Strange Matter w/ Bermuda Triangles, Big No – 8pm, $15, 18+

Saturday, January 14th 2017 – Philadelphia, PA @ Johnny Brendas w/ HIRS, Pinkwash – $15, 21+

Sunday, January 15th 2017 – Washington, DC @ Black Cat Backstage w/ Pygmy Lush, Malady – $15, All Ages

Monday, January 16th 2017 – Brooklyn, NY @ Saint Vitus w/ Big Hush, Ghastly City Sleep – $15, 21+

Great Online Store Update (Alphabet Sale Continues!)

First off, a big thank you to everyone who sent some rain our way the other week when we desperately needed it! The day following the Robotic update we had 2 lovely days of steady, soaking rain, a day of clear skies and another full day of rain. The forest fires in our area are being tamed and we no longer have ash falling from the sky. Hooray! Ya’ll rule, thanks for your thoughts, and we can’t be more grateful to all the firefighters out there doing an intense job of keeping people and their homes safe! We have much to be thankful for!

Well the Grateful Dead Misfits shirts are practically sold out and folks have been picking up the new Wrong Threads along with our new Robotic Empire Shirt. Glad we could provide everyone with some rad clothing for the upcoming fall season and if you haven’t checked out those new designs yet, get on it!

This week we have a hardy little update for you with some vinyl that traveled all the way from Germany. A double LP from Olympia’s BROKEN WATER, the FUNERARY album on Vendetta and a recent WHITEHORSE album. A solid package arrived from Gilead Media that included the new FALSE record, PALE CHALICE and some other wonderful goodies. Apologies are required because we suddenly realized we launched the new CLOUD RATQliphoth album the previous week but an oversight on our part caused the album to be unavailable for purchase on the site. That’s been fixed so if you’re interested in checking out that new one please head on over to the Robotic Empire Online Store . Last but not least, we’ve got a great selection of BASTARD NOISE / MAN IS THE BASTARD albums in the store now thanks to Deep Six records. We’ll be excited to talk more about Robotic Empire’s collaboration with Eric Wood soon!

As promised, we’re continuing the Alphabet Sale with some great music from the D-H sections of our distro shelves. You can find those and all other sale items here: Sales! Please check the full lists below for everything we’ve mentioned above. Thanks everyone and have a great September season.
