Virginia Creep’s first single ‘Vortex’ recently premiered via The AV Club, who sited “while it members have a pedigree on the more extreme end of heavy music, ”Vortex” is wholly concerned with taking simple riff and twisting it in as many different directions as possible, snagging everything it can into its swirling orbit”.

Brooklyn Vegan also noted the track as “haunting, ever-shifting… a kind of sludgy, southern-tinged post-hardcore that would have fit right in on Touch and Go in the 90s”.

‘Vortex’ is available now across all digital platforms with the band’s official verified Spotify profile currently touting a band-curated ‘Influences’ playlist.

Check their Spotify profile here:

In addition, Virginia Creep has been selected to perform alongside the long-awaited return of post-hardcore legends City of Caterpillar early next year, supporting the reunited group on two shows:

City of Caterpillar announces reunion shows

Over a dozen years after disbanding, the long defunct City of Caterpillar announce a string of reunion shows for early 2017.
The quartet initially formed in Richmond, Virginia in 2000, carving out a handful of demos and EPs before releasing their sole, self-titled album in 2002. Renown for an innovative combination of punk rock, emotional hardcore and dramatic instrumental crescendos, City of Caterpillar disbanded in late 2003 but went on to endure a postmortem legacy shared by few of their peers.
Posthumously, Pitchfork referred to them as a band “who successfully blended abstract-rock with hardcore immediacy” while All Music elaborated “The band’s moody, sometimes spastic, sometimes brooding breed of dark rock is both well-written and timeless — spacy expressionism and straight-to-the-heart honesty. Albums of this breed only come along a few times in a genre.
In 2015, renewed interest in the band grew with digital reissues of their LP and Demo + Live Recording collection, followed by a 2016 vinyl reissue of the landmark self-tited LP.
Vice’s music outlet Noisey recently revisited the group in a lengthy retrospective feature, saying that City of Caterpillarencompassed an era” and “strangled…stretched, and mutated screamo until it reflected both the shattering chaos and the eerie quietude of its time“.
Performing for the first time in 13 years with their classic lineup of Brandon Evans (guitar/vocals), Kevin Longendyke (bass/vocals), Jeff Kane (guitar) and Ryan Parrish (drums), City of Caterpillar have scheduled four East Coast shows with a slew of longtime friends’ bands supporting:
Friday, January 13th 2017 – Richmond, VA @ Strange Matter w/ Bermuda Triangles, Big No – 8pm, $15, 18+
Saturday, January 14th 2017 – Philadelphia, PA @ Johnny Brendas w/ HIRS, Pinkwash – $15, 21+
Sunday, January 15th 2017 – Washington, DC @ Black Cat Backstage w/ Pygmy Lush, Malady – $15, All Ages
Monday, January 16th 2017 – Brooklyn, NY @ Saint Vitus w/ Big Hush, Ghastly City Sleep – $15, 21+
Tickets for all shows are available via:
Philadelphia – (tickets on sale 12pm EST)
DC – (tickets on sale Thursday, 12pm EST)

Virginia Creep announces debut EP, premieres first song via The AV Club

Virginia Creep band photo by Hanna Stevens LOW RES
Born in the sprawling suburban wastelands on the outskirts of Washington DC, Virginia Creep emerge from an unexpected hotbed of forward-thinking subversive artists.

With a rich lineage that includes bloodlines as diverse as Tideland, Pig Destroyer, A Papier Mache Monster, Nit Pic & many more, Virginia Creep sound as appropriately bipolar as the myriad divisions surrounding them.

A formidable beast spanning a multitude of heavy rock sub-genres, the forthcoming debut EP from this new quartet merges the wide ranging backgrounds and influences of J.R. Hayes (vocals), Aaron Mason (guitar), Ben Tufts (drums) and Christopher Wright (bass).

All veterans of underground/independent music, Virginia Creep treads new territory for the band members with a left-of-center, haunting melodic approach. Their self-titled first offering ranges the spectrum of rock, punk, grunge and hardcore within just three songs.

Opening track “Vortex” is now streaming via The AV Club, who said “while it members have a pedigree on the more extreme end of heavy music, ”Vortex” is wholly concerned with taking simple riff and twisting it in as many different directions as possible, snagging everything it can into its swirling orbit”:
