Nothing unveil music video for Nirvana cover, ‘Something in the Way’

Nothing-Something-Video-Screenshot

Philadelphia’s Nothing have released a stunning music video for ‘Something in the Way’, their Nirvana cover released in April on Robotic Empire’s “Whatever Nevermind” tribute album.

Stereogum premiered the video, stating that Nothing‘s rendition “does heighten the melancholic lyrics by including a plodding piano in its inaugural moments. Kevin Haus directed the accompanying video, which navigates a fragmented narrative about a woman in search of something.”

The feature launched earlier today, including coverage of the (NSFW) music video:
Of note is Kevin Haus’ dedicated, self-funded approach that he undertook of his own accord. The director also posted the video direct to his YouTube channel:
“Whatever Nevermind” sees Nirvana‘s breakout “Nevermind” album covered in full. Alongside Nothing, the tribute album sees Boris, Cave In, Circa Survive, Kylesa, La Dispute, Pygmy Lush, Thou, Torche, Touche Amore, White Reaper, Wrong and Young Widows running the classic songs through their diverse creative filters.
The vinyl edition quickly sold out, although the release remains available digitally:

New ANCIENT SKY album, lots of Hydra Head restocks and mo!

We hope everyone had a great holiday weekend (if you’re located in the US & A) and now that we’re done with the festivities we’ve got a meaty update for you this week. Lots of new stock from our buddies over at Hydra Head (thanks for the rad robot sketch guys!) including Godflesh + Jesu items abound, along with Cave In and other various goodies. HH-related is the long awaited vinyl issuing of the collaborative Harkonen / These Arms Are Snakes split, finally available as a deluxe 12″ courtesy of Mind Over Matter.

Italian label FOAD sent us some choice vinyl you’ll see below and the new Ancient Sky 12″ and tape are now available in the online shop. Robo’s responsible for the cassette edition, limited to 150 copies with a full color J-card and black shell with yellow imprinting. We’re stoked to work with those guys again for the tape release of the seriously killer new album Mosaic!

Worth re-highlighting is the nice stack of items we brought into the Robotic Empire Online Store last month from Thrill Jockey, A389, Top Shelf, and Gilead. We’ve got that list below for you to glance through again.

Thanks and hope everyone is having a great summer so far.

CREATION IS CRUCIFIXION returns with live appearance and new release

creation-is-crucifixion

Pittsburgh tech-metal hactivists Creation is Crucifixion has reactivated with a double-LP and live appearance scheduled at King of the Monsters’ 20th Anniversary Festival on Saturday, August 1st 2015.

Largely inactive for the past dozen years, CIC cut their teeth in the underground punk/hardcore circuits of the late 90’s and early 00’s. The band’s technical approach to death metal, mixed with a staunchly subversive attitude and subject matter garnered Creation is Crucifixion a cult-following.

Long rumored for over a decade, Antenna Builder, the ‘final’ recording by Creation is Crucifixion’s last active lineup is a 9-minute opus that brilliantly merges CIC’s heavy music along with the noise passages the band became renown for. As one of the highest-fidelity recordings from the band’s extensive output, the lineup’s similarly oppressive Rerecorded Splits material is being joined on a 45rpm 12″ vinyl record released by longtime cohorts Robotic Empire.

Accompanying the studio-recordings 12″ will be a live LP from a classic CIC’s set from on their last European tour, captured Geneva, Switzerland during May of the millennial year. These 15+ year recordings will both finally become available just in time for Creation is Crucifixion’s reunion show at King of the Monster Records’ massive 20th anniversary celebration in Mesa, AZ at the beginning of August. The band released material with the longrunning label back in the late 90’s.

In a lengthy new interview with Vice’s Noisey blog, CIC vocalist Nathan Martin details his transition from frontman of a hardcore metal band to tech company CEO:

“I got into the noise scene following people like Eric Wood [of Bastard Noise] and he’s into noise for a very valid reason, he cares about sound … I remember him always pushing to be more prolific. Man is the Bastard and Bastard Noise clearly do this, they are prolific. Keep doing it. That’s almost a kind of work ethic thing that I even try to do here at Deeplocal, the company I built. Just do it, get it out there, push it and do as much stuff as you can.

We started from a single contract to do some design work. I went back to what I loved doing, which is a little bit of physical engineering, a little bit of software, a little bit of design. I figured I’m just going to use this to do whatever I want to do and we slowly built the company from two people, to five, then eight and now to 25. It was slow, and we’re going on nine years now doing that.

What we did really well was always seize opportunities. When it seemed like there was an opportunity, we did it. I treated the company like a band. Everything that I learned from that band… I did with this company. We built a brand that’s more or less based on trying to be a metal band as a fucking company.”

The full interview gives a concise overview of both Creation is Crucifixion and Deeplocal, along with their approach and impact on existing in two complimentary but very different realms:

The Antenna Builder + Rerecorded Splits and Live In Geneva 2xLP will be available in a limited capacity at the King of the Monsters festival, followed shortly after by a widespread release via Robotic Empire.

June distro updates + WRONG & HOUSE OF LIGHTNING tour dates, TERMINAL FUZZ TERROR video and more!

After the April/Mayhem of our Whatever Nevermind tribute to NIRVANA, we were inundated in mailorder for the bulk of the month. Thank you to everyone who ordered the record, had patience as we got it to you, shared a track online, gram’d a photo of the vinyl alongside your favorite food or beverage, and/or otherwise just gave a crap. It’s been an ambitious and exciting release, and now that the dust has settled on mailorder and Record Store Day, less than 30 copies remain. Last chance ta dance on grabbing that in our Online Store, but be sure to read below for all the good new stuff we’ve gotten as well.

photo by Jack (is the) Barfield
One of the thirteen bands who contributed to Whatever Nevermind was Miami’s WRONG, who battered us with an offkilter rendition of “Stay Away”. This crew of miscreants can’t sit still, and are hitting the road again from June through August in an ever-mutating form, backed (in part) by Rick from TORCHE on drums. Their incestuous Lernaean nature means half of WRONG is now the rhythm section of riff-hurricane HOUSE OF LIGHTNING who will be across all tour dates as well, and a blistering new album is on the visible horizon… Full dates found below, or right here. WRONG‘s debut 12″ EP is available in our Online Store, as is the first HOUSE OF LIGHTNING album – right here.

Alongside WRONG‘s debut EP back in March we also released Seattle squad TERMINAL FUZZ TERROR‘s vinyl debut, Vol. 0: In The Shadow Of The Mountain. These psychedelic beasts have just launched a flash new music video for key cut “Senseless Boogie”, which is up now on ye’ olde YouTube. You can pick up Vol. 0: In The Shadow Of The Mountain in all its uber-deluxe silk-screened-packaging glory AND/OR some fancy ass TERMINAL FUZZ TERROR t-shirts over at the Robotic Empire – Online Store.

Beyond all that cool stuff, some Robo-related artists are kicking in new forms and we’ve done our best to stock their latest tunes. Along with some killer new stuff and restocks from the likes of ANNE, BIG BUSINESS, ELDER, FORN, IRON REGAN, LIGTNING BOLT, LITURGY, NOTHING, PRIMITIVE MAN, THE SADDEST LANDSCAPE, TOE and a bunch of others, it’s exciting to announce the new release from ANCIENT SKY members ‘other’ group DOMMENGANG which is absolutely killer psych-rock gold, and SUMAC‘s bludgeoning debut which contains one Aaron Turner of ISIS, HOUSE OF LOW CULTURE, OLD MAN GLOOM and many more. Lots of cool stuff added to our Online Store, here’s the full list:

Please note: this list is likely incomplete and we weren’t able to get a list of stores in other countries: although Canada and Europe should be reasonably covered.

If you can: PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL STORES! This is an important day for retail shops, and Record Store Day really helps local businesses who bust ass year-round to get tunes to those who enjoy them.

Everyone anywhere else: we plan to have a ‘standard’ edition of the “Whatever Nevermind” release available online shortly after RSD. Ideally, Saturday evening but TBC. Keep an eye on our site and Online Store then, we will have a LOT of new items available in addition to the “Whatever Nevermind” album. A full list of new titles will get posted on our main page. www.roboticempire.com

Thank you!!

LA DISPUTE’s version of ‘Polly’ streaming now with an interview at the All Music site

La DisputeRoughly a year ago La Dispute recorded a tribute to Nirvana‘s ‘Polly’ at a live show in Seattle, capturing the aesthetic of the originators run through the filters of La Dispute‘s creative engines. The A/V Club showcased the angular version of the classic track and we felt this rendition wonderfully fit the vision we have for our Nirvana tribute series.

On the cusp of releasing Whatever Nevermind alongside Record Store Day 2015, the venerable All Music site has penned an excellent spotlight on La Dispute‘s contribution, which gives a great insight into the far-reaching influence of Nirvana and why La Dispute chose to cover ‘Polly':

http://www.allmusic.com/blog/post/song-premiere-la-dispute-tackle-nirvanas-polly/

From the feature, La Dispute bassist Adam Vass explains how they approached the cover:

“It’s hard, you don’t want to remove it so far from the source material to where it isn’t identifiable anymore, but at the same time if we were to just have played it the way it was on the record, it wouldn’t have been as good as the original version, and it would have felt wrong, like we were abusing the opportunity. I like to think that we found happy ground in between those two extremes, and we changed it a little bit, but just enough to make it something special for us but still stay true to the original track.”

The A/V’ Club‘s original feature includes a short documentary on the musicians and cover song, which can also be found here:

Whatever Nevermind is being released on vinyl and digitally this Saturday, April 18th.

Digital pre-orders are live now with ‘Polly’ available as an immediate download (alongside Circa Survive‘s cover of ‘Drain You’ and Nothing‘s tribute to ‘Something In The Way’):
