THOU mega-update with new vinyl, t-shirts & tapes! Plus a new TILTS Kickstarter, HOUSE OF LIGHTNING and more!

Thou-TheSacrifice700
For one of the most prolific heavy bands around, THOU have really outdone themselves lately. Along with their stunning new longplayer Heathen, the Louisiana group also serve up The Sacrifice, a 5 track EP recorded at the same time but of a distinctly different vibe. The overall tempo is increased compared to Heathen, focusing more on sludgey dirges than expansive gloom. However THOU‘s trademark doom and roar is still very present, on masterful display in condensed form.

With a companion drone piece and classic NIRVANA cover (“I Hate Myself and I Want to Die”), this 25-minute EP is now available on Robotic Empire on vinyl and cassette. The 12″ vinyl comes on clear 180 gram heavyweight vinyl, in a “tip-on” style casewrapped jacket with flood black interior. The cassette edition is limited to 200 copies and comes in a two-color silkscreened J-card. Both editions include a high-quality digital download.

* You can stream the full EP now via local Louisiana outfit 225 Magazine, and/or Soundcloud
* The Sacrifice pre-orders are up now in the Robotic Empire – Online Store
(The Sacrifice officially comes out April 29th, pre-orders are expected to ship roughly a week or so beforehand)

Appropriately, a cassette edition of Heathen is also available, yielding THOU‘s most lurching, expansive material. A brilliant union of melody and dismay – with the biting social commentary the group has become renowned for. With ten tracks at over an hour’s length, instrumental interludes break up the otherwise massive tracks.

THOU have crafted their finest long-player yet, and Robotic Empire is thrilled to present the cassette edition. Limited to 200 copies and housed in a letterpress J-card, THOU once again brings the thunder with quality and class.

* You can download Heathen now via Bandcamp, and/or iTunes or stream it on Spotify
* Heathen cassettes are available now in the Robotic Empire – Online Store

In conjunction with the new THOU releases and their US tour kicking off this month (see dates below), we have also properly revamped the landmark Baton Rouge, You Have Much To Answer For 12″ EP. This pivotal release (for the band and for the label) initiated what has evolved into a series of lengthy “EP” releases with a crushing NIRVANA cover included. The absolutely bludgeoning Bleach-era tune “Sifting” is joined by two mammoth THOU originals and a monster drone tune.

This release set the standard for our maze of collaborations with these guys, and accordingly we’ve re-issued it with 180 gram heavyweight vinyl, a ticker tip-on style gatefold jacket and all around beefed this thing up to the max.

Since this comes out alongside the new “EP” The Sacrifice we figured we’d drop a sneaky coupon code folks can use to pick up both at a discount. If you order both on vinyl, fang in the “THOU25” coupon code at checkout, you can pick up both for $25.

If there somehow wasn’t enough new THOU activity right now, the dudes are hitting the road THIS week and we’ve printed up some phatty t-shirts for them to take along the journey. You can check out the full list to see a full list of their upcoming shows over the next month, plus their activity extending beyond the West Coast come June/July.

If you won’t be making it out to one of the aforementioned live rock concert gigs, we’ve got two THOU double-sided t-shirt designs up now in the Robotic Empire – Online Store

To flip the script on how we pre-order a release, TILTS and Robotic Empire have joined forces once again for a Kickstarter campaign to release their sophomore album, Cuatro Hombres. Amazingly, and humblingly, we reached our initial goal in under 24 hours.

We are utilizing the positive aspects of Kickstarter to create a more engaging pre-order, where folks can “pledge” for a variety of “rewards” ranging from the simple (digital download, vinyl LP, t-shirt) to the more involved (custom test presses, TILTS playing to you and your friends + cooking you a meal!) – Basically we’re hoping to make it interesting and drum up some funds to not only press the new album, but also repress the debut LP as well.

Although we quickly hit our initial goal, the amount we set realistically only covers part of the overall cost to make all this cool stuff – so we’re hoping more cats will get in the mix on this pre-order and if/when we hit the 4k mark, we’ll add the debut LP back into the mix for a special Kickstarter-only rate as well.

Please check out the TILTS Kickstarter campaign for all kinds of cool jibba jabb, and/or preview a (rough mix & unmastered) new track now:

Beyond all this amazing Robo activity but still semi-related to our camp is the long-awaited, much-belabored HOUSE OF LIGHTNING album. Our friends in Texas, Fair Warning Records, have finally unleashed this beast of a debut, taking what was started with DOVE, upping the riff-tornado and generally screwin with your dome.

Rising from the ashes like a mighty phoenix, HOUSE OF LIGHTNING features past and present members of DOVE, FLOOR, and CAVITY. Lightworker is a 10-song, 40-minute riff-rollercoaster that was recorded by Mark Nikolich at Atomic Audio (FLOOR, KYLESA) with brilliant jacket artwork by Francesco LoCastro.

We are extremely stoked this beast is finally available, after many years in the making. Henry is an absolute madman shredder freak and this album requires repeated deep listens truly “get it”. We scored some of the limited color vinyl copies (both green and orange) and you can pick this up now in the Robotic Empire – Online Store.

YES! Lots of mean titles there, hit up the Robotic Empire – Online Store for all that and obviously heaps more.

In Utero In Tribute In Entirety Nirvana tribute album cover
Last but definitely not least, Robotic Empire is participating in Record Store Day for the first time in 2014, with the release of our longest running project ever, the NIRVANA tribute album called In Utero: In Tribute: In Entirety. It’s been roughly half the label’s existence in the making, rounded the corner as our 100th (!) release, and officially comes out April 19th, 15 years almost exactly to the date of our very first ever release.

To say this is a long time coming is a major understatement, and we’re beyond thrilled that it’s finally coming out. The initial vinyl release will be the Record Store Day version, which comes on maroon color vinyl and includes a RSD-exclusive poster. After RSD concludes, we will have a standard version available for mailorder folks who can’t nab it via the record stores, but definitely head out to your local shop on April 19th as it’s tough for independent businesses out there (as we know well) and it’s very cool there is a specific event that keeps people aware of the brick & mortar operations braving the realities of retail today.

OK that’s it, holy smokes sooo much cool stuff – please pick something up if you can. JAH BLESS!

Nirvana “In Utero” Tribute Album Launched as Robotic Empire’s 100th release and 15th Anniversary as a Label!

In Utero In Tribute In Entirety Nirvana tribute album cover

We are absolutely elated to announce Robotic Empire’s 100th release and 15-year-anniversary with the long-long-awaited Nirvana covers album, “In Utero: In Tribute: In Entirety”.

Roughly half the label’s existence in the making, the 12-song tribute album collects tracks from a healthy variety of artists covering Nirvana’s final studio album in full.

Including contributions from well-known groups Thursday and Circa Survive, longtime label cohorts Daughters, Young Widows, Pygmy Lush and Thou, new comrades Ceremony, Mean Jeans and Whirr, and some of the final recorded works from Jay Reatard, These Arms Are Snakes and Black Math Horseman – here is the full track listing:

1. Pygmy Lush – “Serve the Servants”
2. Circa Survive – “Scentless Apprentice”
3. These Arms Are Snakes – “Heart-Shaped Box”
4. Thursday – “Rape Me”
5. Jay Reatard – “Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle”
6. Young Widows – “Dumb”
7. Mean Jeans – “Very Ape”
8. Thou – “Milk It”
9. Whirr – “Pennyroyal Tea”
10. Daughters – “Radio Friendly Unit Shifter”
11. Ceremony – “Tourette’s”
12. Black Math Horseman – “All Apologies”

The vinyl edition is being released in conjunction with Record Store Day 2014 on April 19th, and comes on maroon vinyl with a huge RSD-exclusive poster. The digital release will become available on the same day, and can be pre-ordered via iTunes now:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/in-utero-in-tribute/id825844196

An immediate download of Jay Reatard’s version of “Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle” is available with the digital release pre-order. Vice/Noisey have posted this newly-mastered version of Jay’s track – for which he recorded all instruments, and was sadly one of his last recordings – along with Mean Jeans’ appropriately rippin version of “Very Ape”:

“In Utero: In Tribute: In Entirety” comes out almost exactly 15 years to the date of Robotic Empire’s first release in April of 1999 (initially under the moniker of Robodog Records) – setting off a decade and a half of unleashing mutant music from the likes of Torche, Isis, pg.99, Floor, Pig Destroyer, Red Sparowes, Jesu, The Red Chord and many others.

“It has been a privilege to introduce so many unique bands to likeminded freaks over the past 15 years. Looking back at what’s transpired almost seems unreal, and even with a shameful carbon footprint of many thousand plastic circles – I can safely say that it has been an honor to work with the artists we have, and a hearty thank you is due to all who’ve listened thus far. I genuinely hope you’ll enjoy this tribute to one of the bands who first showed me the strange side of music. Nirvana was truly one of the greats, and we’ve done our best to craft an appropriate homage to so many people’s all-time favorite band.” – Andy Low / Robotic Empire

Robo Store overhaul!! FLOOR Self-Titled 12″+7″ repress, our BIGGEST SALE EVER, rarities and way more!

Happy New Year everyone, we are stoked to kick things off with a newly re-vamped Robotic Empire – Online Store including a new release, a mountain of crazy sales, a special test press and more. Let’s get into it:

First and foremost, FLOOR‘s seminal Self-Titled album has been reissued as a standalone 12″ with a bonus 7″ containing outtakes from the album session. Originally assembled as part of the extensive Below & Beyond box set discography a few years back, we are supremely stoked for one of our top favorite albums of all time to be made available once again in a morewidespread manner.

Keeping in mind the original vision for the LP along with appropriate upgrades to reflect the expanded nature of this killer release, FLOOR‘s landmark album (to date) has been reissued in a gatefold jacket with silver color added throughout, and custom glue-pocket to house the bonus 7″. A high quality digital download is now also included, containing the full album and bonus tracks.

To add icing to the cake for like-minded diehard fans, we’ve worked with the band and our bros at Decibel Magazine to craft a limited deluxe “Hall of Fame” edition of the album with further printwork (including full printed lyrics for the first time ever), some rare and never before seen photos, a full transcription of the Decibel feature on the album, plus a cloth patch and weatherproof sticker.

We’ve done our best to make this reissue the definitive version of what we consider to be an incredibly groundbreaking album. For those unfamiliar with FLOOR‘s first proper full-length release, it is a magnificent merging of the best elements from “heavy” to “catchy”. With the monumental “bomb string” in tow, an unlikely but amazing combination of incredibly deep-tuned doom rock, sing-along harmonized vocals, a bombastic rhythm and pop sensibilities all set FLOOR apart from contemporaries. Nothing before or after has truly compared to this brilliant monolith of a thunderous-yet-soaring doom sludge pop rock hybrid. Laying the bedrock for what would come years later with TORCHE, the self-titled FLOOR album was and is the stuff of legends.

You can preview the full album via our Bandcamp.

Thankfully the posthumous legacy created by their massive recordings has revived activity into the band, and Robotic Empire is honored to finally present this amazing release for availability once again.

A limited run of 500 were made as the deluxe “Hall of Fame” edition on silver/blue vinyl, and for the standard edition 300 were pressed on clear vinyl, 300 on electric blue and 900 on black.

With a stunning new album not far from release, it’s been amazing to see FLOOR rise again and we’re beyond thrilled to make the S/T album available again. The deluxe edition is $19.99 and the standard edition $16.99

* FLOOR - Self-Titled Reissue 12″+7″ is available now in the Robotic Empire – Online Store

Semi-related via guitar player/vocalist Steve Brooks’ continuation of innovative heavy and catchy music, we’re also re-launching the Robotic Empire – Online Store with the In Return 10″+CD dropped to $11.99 (until the end of January only) to commeorate all this awesome activity. This includes all color varieties so if you’ve not picked up this recent repress, now’s the time:

* TORCHE - In Return 10″+CD (and lots more) are available now in the Robotic Empire – Online Store

Another catalog Robo release that we’re happy to have available again, is the overrun copies of PG.99‘s Singles 12″ that we pressed a few years back to coincide with their reunion shows. We had some extra vinyl and jackets, but no printed innersleeves… but thanks to our brethren at Seattle’s Broken Press, we’ve got some super nice double-sided silkscreened inserts to round out the release. About 70 copies were run in this manner, and include a small silkscreened “Girl With Heart” image print as well.

* PAGENINETYNINE - Singles LP is now available in the Robotic Empire – Online Store

So while we’re seriously stoked to have those cool new offerings for the re-launch of our Online Store, the true meat of this update lies in the absolutely stupidly hugely unwieldy MASSIVE sale we’ve now got going on the site.

Although our store is continuously being updated (forgive some wonky bits), along with altering the store in multiple ways over the past month we’ve done a lengthy inventory overhaul of all the distro items we carry. Some gems were found, a few duds, a bunch of rare old stuff, a few weird ones and just generally a LOT of items we didn’t realise were kicking around have now been added back to the site, typically in very small quantities.

Most of the old stuff has been CRAZY discounted (including about 50 different LPs priced at 99 cents?!) to get it out of our doors and into your homes so peep this mega list of 420 sale items now up on our Online Store:

GAWWDAYUM! We’ve run some crazy sales in the past, but this one may take the cake. Get em while they’re hot, and/or if you’re a fan of other formats we’re also offering up the following equally insane sales:

* All cassettes (aside from a few new Robo releases) are $2.99 until the end of January – this excludes the bangin new MUTOID MAN tape we dropped, and the recent THOU tape re-presses.

* All 7″s are $2.99 until the end of January – excluding a small handful of items we can’t discount that much, the vast majority of 7″s we carry are dirt cheap (classic punx price) for TWO WEEKS ONLY!

* ALL CDs ARE 99 CENTS – we are blowing out the distro CDs, likely for good. Do you have a car stereo? LOAD UP. Do you have an iPod/iPhone/MyPad/whatever? RIPS AHOY. Are you killeroldschool and just crank CDs hard? LUCKY DAY. This sale runs until the our CDs stocks are gone… PEACE OUT!

So that’s it. We’ve lost our minds. Honestly though, we have a seriously small area for the boatloads of stock we have and need to clear it out to make room for a very busy 2014. Although formal announcements have yet to be made (so this is the sneaky earlybird heads up), beyond the aforementioned FLOOR reissue, we also need to drum up cash for the absolutely killer new releases on deck from the likes of THOU, TILTS, JAKOB, plus *hopefully* JESU‘s Ascension 2LP, ideally some PYGMYLUSH stuff, and the long long long awaited vinyl pressing of THE SACRIFICE POLES album. The Nirvana tribute comp is actually at the mastering stage now (!!), and once our artwork is wrapped up the longest running project the label’s dragged feet on will finnnalllllly see the light of day. Which is cool, because it really did turn out awesome in the end – such a mission to do it all legit though.

Looks like we’re rambling, so time to go. Please buy something from our revamped Online Store. We celebrate our 15th anniversary as a “record label” in April of this year and it’s honestly kinda crazy sometimes that we’re still in operation, given how seriously weird our business operates and what’s happened to most of our peers.

We truly rely on our amazing mailorder followers, so a genuine and heartfelt thank you is due to everyone who’s supported us in the past – and a thank you in advance for those picking something up now.

We look forward to a busy and awesome year, much love from Team Robo!

HOLLOW SUNSHINE album out today, video premiere on Noisey/Vice, iTunes coverage and mo’

We are thrilled to announce that the debut album by HOLLOW SUNSHINE is out today! Available on vinyl through the Robotic Empire – Online Store and digitally through iTunes or Bandcamp, Held Above contains 9 tracks of blissed out doom/pop/garage glory.

Also premiering today is the band’s first official music video, for the album track “Here For Now”. This just dropped via Noisey / Vice, who called it “handheld and woozily out of focus – like the world is whizzing by when you’re just the right side of tipsy… It’s pure 90s and it makes us wanna dig out that dusty Big Muff and turn everything up loud.” Believe dat!

On the digital download tip, iTunes was kind enough to feature the album cover on their Main storefront page, Music landing page, and Alternative genre page. Too cool! Here’s a little screengrab of HOLLOW SUNSHINE chillin below their girl Lady Gaga:

HOLLOW SUNSHINE vinyl in! +THOU cassette represses and heavy distro items

We’re massively stoked to announce that the debut longplayer by HOLLOW SUNSHINE, Held Above, is now available and Pitchfork has dropped the title track song premier, proclaiming it “a sublime slice of downer pop”.

For the uninitiated, HOLLOW SUNSHINE are a California duo who combine deep tuning with pop undertones and a garage din, crafting a unique combination of warmly familiar elements. The hypnotic swirl of lush vocals hovering over downtuned riffs and steady rhythms yield a mesmerizing listening experience.

Held Above exists within a delicate balance between blown out sludge, narcotic drone and pop sensibilities. Yet this contrast between heaviness and catchiness, with melodic vocals providing a calm and consistent drift throughout, sets HOLLOW SUNSHINE well apart from contemporaries.

The nine tracks of Held Above were self-recorded by the band, vocalist Morgan Enos and guitarist / songwriter Reuben Sawyer, then mastered by James Plotkin, aiming for a soothing “lo” fidelity with clarity kept in mind. This album should appeal to varied fans of everything from TORCHE and JESU to BUILT TO SPILL and SMASHING PUMPKINS.

A visual artist renowned for his work via Rainbath Visual (CHELSEA WOLFE, DEAFHEAVEN, DESTRUCTION UNIT etc etc), Sawyer also conceived the stark imagery for the cover, which is screen-printed on complimentary colored paper by Broken Press. 700 copies of HOLLOW SUNSHINE‘s debut LP were made in the first pressing:

* 100 pink (includes a bonus back-patch)
* 200 white
* 400 black

With a high-quality digital download included, Held Above can now be ordered from the following locations:

* Vinyl w/download available now from Robotic Empire or Revolver, Interpunk and more.

* Digital pre-orders are now live at iTunes or Bandcamp, Amazon and more (available digitally on November 12th).

We’re also happy to report that the two long-playing THOU “EP”s released by Robotic Empire, Baton Rouge, You Have Much to Answer For and The Archer & The Owle, have both been repressed on cassette.

Both releases have been repressed on white cassettes, 200 of each this time around. Same oppressively burly jams, both of which can be found in full on our Bandcamp page.

* These two THOU tapes and far more (shirts, vinyl, CDs, etc) are available now in the Robotic Empire – Online Store

Hollow Sunshine debut album to be released by Robotic Empire

Hollow Sunshine Promo PhotoRobotic Empire is proud to present Hollow Sunshine‘s debut LP, titled Held Above, set for a November 12th release date worldwide.

Hollow Sunshine is a California-based duo consisting of Reuben Sawyer (instrumentation) and Morgan Enos (vocals). Blending massive downtuned riffs with a pop aesthetic, Held Above yields a familiar yet all together unique listening experience

The contrast between heaviness and catchiness (with melodic vocals providing a calm, consistent drift throughout) makes Hollow Sunshine stand out starkly from contemporaries. Blurring the line between pummelling doom and soaring pop, Held Above expands upon ideas forged on initial EPs released by Vendetta and Bridgetown Records, but with new found clarity to composition and production.

A visual artist by trade, Sawyer is also known for his intricate artwork through Rainbath Visual, utilized by a variety of bands such as Chelsea Wolfe, Deafheaven, Inter Arma, Thou and Wolves in the Throne Room. His minimalist imagery for Held Above juxtaposes the rich sonic textures found within the 9-track album.

Held Above is Hollow Sunshine‘s strongest work to date, and will be available on vinyl and digitally via Robotic Empire on November 12th. Audio, video and further details will become available shortly, and for now a teaser trailer can be viewed here:

ALPACA pre-orders up now, new song premier and BANGIN distro update to the Robotic Empire – Online Store

Alpaca - hall 700px

Robotic Empire is excited to announce that pre-orders are now available for ALPACA‘s debut album, both physically and digitally. Set for release October 1st, Demimonde is the first release from ALPACA and explores new ground for both the label and band members involved.

Comprised of vocalist/guitar player Justin Nuckols and multi-instumentalist Allen Blickle, Demimonde was recorded over a five year period across locations in New York and the members’ native Virginia. Much of ALPACA‘s material was initially created throughout arduous tour schedules for BARONESS, the accomplished hard rock band for which Blickle drummed.

The dance, pop, and melody-driven compositions Blickle crafted for ALPACA juxtapose with Nuckols’ darker, groove-focused, and harmonic vocal explorations.

Alpaca - vinyl spread 700px

This musical collaboration from two ex-step-brothers began in the late ’90s while high school students in the small Appalachian town of Lexington, VA. After separate nomadic wanderings, Nuckols and Blickle both wound up in Brooklyn, NY in 2007.

ALPACA intermittently recorded material between BARONESS‘ tour activities, finally hunkering down in the winter of 2012-2013 to expand their mutual visions and perfect mixes, ultimately finishing a body of work many years in the making.

To compliment the level of detail the music received, the vinyl edition of Demimonde comes housed in a five-color gatefold LP jacket with added spot-gloss finish. Accordingly elaborate color vinyl is available , and joined by a high-quality digital download. 800 color vinyl LPs were pressed + 200 black vinyl, and a CD edition is also available.

We’re absolutely thrilled to finally have this album just about done. It’s been a long ass time since Allen first played us some proto-Paca jams in the old Robo HQ and we’re truly excited to help an old friend with a fantastic debut release.

Beyond that cool label activity, we’ve got a powerhouse of righteous new items in the Robotic Empire – Online Store. First off, we have to note the absolutely insane multi-vinyl releases from THE OCEAN! Pelagic Records really went beyond the standards of “norm” with those releases, plus more GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT on vinyl for the die-hards. Also on the rad-import-tip is the pseudo-sanctioned CURSED “bootleg” LPs, which are just what you’d hope and expect. Semi-ALPACA-related is the badass old BARONESS / UNPERSONS split LP newly available on red color vinyl, and we also got the new LP from THE BODY, also released by At A Loss. Label-favorite FOREST SWORDS is finally here, give that one a chance. Some rippers (CAPTIVE BOLT, CIVILIZATION, EYC) from the newly revived Dead Tank label/distro are now in stock, plus a slew of tapes from Like Young. Appropriately horrific and terrifying is the ungodly COFFINS Colossal Hole 10″ for the true freaks. Also good to see To Live A Lie cranking out filthy high-quality grind (ASSHOLE PARADE, MEHKAGO NT) as always. Good stuff abound, here’s the full list:
